So, after over a year of dithering, I joined a local tribal bellydance class (Gypsy Caravan style). I've been going a couple of months and I am absolutely ADORING it- I go with a couple of good friends, and the classmates and teacher couldn't be lovelier. However, as the classes go on I'm starting to notice a problem.

I cannot seem to maintain "soft knees". I have to consciously remind myself to do it, and any time the teacher has to correct me it's along the lines of keeping my knees a little bent. I can see quite clearly the problem it's causing- my moves look either a bit delicate and airy-fairy or jerky, when of course I want to be nice and "earthy". I know that I can't expect to be anything close to "perfect" at this early stage but I don't want to start bad habits, so I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem and if so, they could pass on some tips to help me become a bit more grounded.

Also, if there's any Scottish/UK tribal dancers out there, I'd love to make some friends with the same interest! I feel like I gush about it to everyone and nobody cares, heh.

I've not been posting for some time due to my hectic work schedule but I came across this lovely little item today and thought I should share. I think the most interesting piece of information in the description of the corset is that the lighter, more flexible bones are made of celluloid.

All mighty corsetry, I invoke your help once again.

A friend of mine so graciously got me a corset for my 21st birthday. And I can assure you, this time it's a real corset. I'm wearing it now, and it is -impossible- for me to bend over.

I'd like to know if there is a special bra/petal/thing that can help me get breast support. My waist is very much cinched, but I definitely feel like I'm not wearing a bra. In fact, my chest is the only part that is terribly uncomfortable. Is there something I can do? or is this something I should expect from corsets? I love corsets, I love the way they look and feel for the most part.

I will love and wear this corset either way, but if there is something I can do (short of attempting to slip a bra underneath) please, let m know.

Can you do a muslin corset fitting on yourself, or do you always need a helper to make the changes? Seems to me like you would need help.

WORK

This week at work Ive been busy making western gun holsters (3x double gun belts to complete in total), I have to say I feel very lucky to have projects that continue to expand my skills with leather work.......not to mention how awesome it is having a 'living resource' passing on and teaching me so much information (bless the boss)!!

Anyway this week I finished x2 of my double gun belts, one in black + one in brown. I really didn't expect there to be so many pieces, though most of the work is in the preparing and dyeing. Once everythings ready they come together quiet quickly.

Some pics of my first double gun holster completed.

And a customer wearing it....

UPDATE

The fetish ball outfit I made looked great though a few hurdles have made the completion process a bit challenging (getting ill, breaking both my domestic and industrial machines in the same week, not to mention losing my eyeleting tools) - lucky my customer was so lovely about the whole thing, allowing me to get everything under control first (note to self:- the unexpected always happens when you run short of time).

I took a trip to lapco this week to stock up on goodies for the x-mas holidays (yes I have plans), got another dye for my gorgeous hand press so now it's eyeleting like a dream (my machines are running again too thank goodness).

My exhibition is just around the corner mmmmmm 14th December actually, not to sure how thats going to go but I hope to have at least dressed my two new mannequins, and a few half torsos for the wall. After that it's my orders again (the 2 wedding dresses seem due for my full commitment).......I'll post some pics as I make progress.

Ok so when I haven't been busy with 'the busy' my newest endeavor is learning to roller blade (actually Cleo the dog drags me around the park and I try to stay upright while traveling at high speed), but that has at least given me an excuse to take time for fresh air! Otherwise I'm likely to be found on the couch watching 'Eastwick' or 'Warehouse 13'(see I need an excuse for fresh air)lol.

Does anyone know of a good resource for tulle-bi-telli? I've been looking for fabric with gold metal in it, but I'm warming up to the idea of using silver in black fabric. The only thing I could find are the lengths from Dahlal and a website called Pure Egypt (has anyone ordered from them before)?

Also, does anyone have any experience making costuming with assuit? I could sure use some advice before I undertake my own little fitted garment.

This was found, of course, over at The Pit. The story isn't very well-written, but I like the plot and it sucked me in. The author hadn't made too many mistakes until I got to this gem:

"A mother abandoning her son, right before his birthday. That’s unsanitary.”

*snerk* Unless she was abandoning him in a sewer, (and considering he's turning 18 and that's not what happened) I don't think that's what she was going for with that sentence.

I have a friend interested in this corset:

http://heavyred.com/victoriansadgirlsteelbonedbuskwaistcincher.aspx

She wants to know if anyone has bought anything from heavy red and whats the quality of their stuff?

I told her you do get what you pay for in most cases with corsets.

any testimonials or warnings?

any help would be appreciated.

Hey everyone, if you haven't already had a chance to, I hope you'll help me out with a "yes" vote (see post here). I've submitted three designs and am anxious to have at least one of them made. The stronger the yes vote, the better my chances. The voting period ends soon, hence my gentle prodding. ;)

Thanks!

And if you've already voted, super-duper thanks!!

Friends --
I'm very excited to announce the release of my new book, "Stomping Ground." It's an examination of the connections between bellydance and spirituality -- I look at historical uses of dance as ritual and then provide exercises you can use to integrate dance into your daily meditational/spiritual practice. This book is a great holiday gift for yourself or the bellydancer on your list. You can order a copy from lulu.com (go here: http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/stomping-ground/6002400) or purchase one directly from me at the next Hands of Kali show.

If you're in the Seattle area, please join me for a book release party at the OK Hotel next Thursday, 12/3, as part of Seattle's monthly Artwalk. We'll have readings from the book, plus bellydance performances by Adderstone and Hands of Kali. Renowned bellydance photographer Sarah Wright (who did all photography for the book) will have her work on display, as will many other wonderful artists. The party runs 7-10pm Thursday 12/3 -- it's free and all-ages. OK Hotel is located under the viaduct at 212 Alaskan Way S.

Thank you!
xoxo,
Kendra Hayes from Hands of Kali

I want to add waist tape to my new corset that I am making and have a question...I looked at one that I had purchased "off the rack"...it appears that each corset panel has waist tape added, not in continuous tape around. Is this the usual way it is done? It looks like it was done after lining was added but before each section was added to the next one....
