Fashion Grammar Police blotter for today
1. LJ community user: i hav ebeen websurfing all morning and realised that what i want is shit skirt from Lane Bryant, in a 22.

If you know the skirt is shit, why on earth do you want it? A better-sewn one will last longer.

2. Small image behind cut. This is a t-shirt being sold by a completely different LJ user elsewhere.

hamster computer
My poor computer that is run by hamsters (i.e. from 1999) is being alternately cajoled and cursed at by my dearest darling. Apparently, I had less than a floppy disc's worth of space on the hard drive when I tried to download Firefox update, which wouldn't work, so I had to use Internet Explorer, which took over my entire computer within minutes with a virus that isn't going away. So let that be a lesson to you not to download updates! I visit with you all today from my laptop, which does not have anything I actually need on it.

I have been in a panic making stuff for the fall semester - here's the Emmeline apron!

It came out so damn cute, I can't stand it. Sewing supply fabric on one side, rock star fabric on the other! Pardon the lack of cropping, my laptop has "paint" which as far as I can tell is completely useless. I'm almost done with the Amy Butler Birdie Sling, which is kind of kicking my butt. It took me as long to cut out and interface as a corset! The sewing seems to be going faster though, and it's a great bag so far.

Me & Josh went to see Henry IV at Shakespeare in the Park last night, and it was a very decent performance. The actor playing young Henry V was excellent. I love me some bloody war plays! They announced before the play that what with being outdoors in the middle of Hollywood (sirens, helicopters, mariachi bands) it didn't really matter if you turned your cell phone off or not. Next Friday I go on my own to hear a baroque ensemble play in the Renaissance section of the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena (there's only so much Josh will put up with). This summer has afforded me a little more time off and you'd better believe I'm taking advantage of it before the insanity of fall commences. Off to dinner!

Rita Hayworth-inspired 'do (tutorial, that is!!)
Yes, folks, it's me again. Are you sick of me? This has been an outlet as of late since I'm a work-at-home mom of 2 carrot-topped kids (the girl has AMAZING hair for a 4-year-old that even *I* envy!), and well, finding this little corner of LJ-land has given me a few new things to occupy my downtime - and these little things help me to not feel as frumpish or matronly. In fact, after what I did today, I felt down right HOT. *snaps*

I guess when the husband lovingly mentioned (while walking behind me in the grocery store) that he "wanted to eat a hole right through my jeans," well, I did okay with the 'do. LOL!

While perusing DIVAS - THE SITE last night, I found that I was fond of Rita Hayworth's gallery. (I really couldn't have put faces with many of the famous "Old Hollywood" names before scrolling through the site.)

Since I have long hair that's insanely fine and THICK and even nappily-challenged, I thought I'd give a long vintage style a go today... I was up for it!

ON TO THE TUTORIAL!! (+8) )

So I don't usually go for a vintage look with my hair. I usually keep it in a Debbie Harry bob, which I suppose could be considered vintage, but anyway.

Today I did a photoshoot for a back to school at for a clothing store and had to do my own hair, makeup, and styling.

This is what I came up with )

Hello all. I'm spending a lazy Saturday attempting to clean out my sewing closet (er, um, ONE of my sewing closets anyway...) and I came upon a box of completed projects that have pretty much just been sitting here since I finished them. So I thought I would share them at least before I figure out what to do with them next. If anyone would be interested in buying this, please make me an offer! I'd love to see it go to a good home where it might actually be worn.

So I was thinking menswear... )
Both pieces were only tried on that night, and will probably stay in that condition in my closet ad infinitum unless someone is interested in taking them off my hands. Thanks for looking!

Raqs Gothique @ the OMEDA Festival. Melbourne, Vic (AU)
Hello all,

if you are in Melbourne and haven't made it out to the OMEDA festival then I urge you to do so - Sunday is the last day and there is so much to see and do (and buy!!) Be sure to check out the market place - its been deadly on my wallet this year. And the taster workshops have been awesome, I'm booked for the Bollywood tomorrow with Kelly Garland, and Maria Sangiorgi and Melissa Christini's workshops today were just brilliant.
The PDF for the festival is at the OMEDA website: www.omeda.org.au

* Raqs Gothique will be highlighted on the marketplace stage with SerpentSkirt at 1.40(ish) pm, if you are considering auditioning for SerpentSkirt on the 28th of July then this is a great way to see us and check it out.

* Ma'isah's afternoon workshop "Slow Controlled Movements with Accents - the ultimate spooky workshop" is booked out! However if there are no-shows or any room available I will be able to accommodate a small number of extras on the day - so be sure to put your name down as a stand-by in case a place opens up!

* Both Bayside Hafla and the OMEDA Gala Dinner/Show were both awesome gigs, and we will have some new video for 08 (finally) up on the website as soon as possible - so stay tuned! And keep an eye out for more gigs as the year progresses - we have some dramatic new shows for you.

Hope to see you there!
Ma'isah

(x-posted rather a bit - sorry if you see this one lots)

lovely new corset
I bought this lovely new corset and unfortunately its not the size that was stated, so im selling it on

its size medium, id say it would fit a size 12/14 nicely

its red and black and made of a lovely silky material, it has bones in it but they are not rigged steel bones nor are they flimsy high street basque like bones.

Ive got it up on ebay f(i think thats a real bargain at buy it now price £30 but you can also put a bid on the item)

Currently my dreams are haunted by Nathan Fillion saying "the hammer is my penis" over and over again. That's... that's a bad thing, right?

My latest corset comission=extremely shaped underbust
Here is a pic of the latest custom corset I finished. It was made for a local burlesque dancer, Calla Doll, and has a very extreme shape. Finished measurements are 27 underbust, 18 waist, 36 hip. It's made of dark pink satin with lighter pink satin outer casings and has flase hip gussets (pieces cut shaped like the dome of the hips, but are not true gussets). It has two sets of loose straps (lined with the same fabric) she is going to tuck the back straps into the front of the corset to eliminate back fattage and tie the front ones around her neck halter style, weird request I know, but when she tried it on it looked just fine. She can also criss cross them and tie the fronts and back together. It's backed with thin batiste and lined with medium weight cotton trigger and of course has waist tape and bi-directional back lacing. Boned with 1/4 flat steels on all the seams. Outer Casings are decorative only, bones are actually sewn on the inside of the corset lining.

Corset has a few pulls/wrinkles in the photo this is due to the following factors:

A) It doesn't fit the pillow and is being pulled funny, and also it's extreme waist to hip ratio was a beeyotch to fit together nice and totally smoothly.
B) Is SATIN (Satan)
C)It was made for a burlesque dancer who wanted a lot of movement and a very lightweight corset so it is not heavily backed/lined
and
D) Did I mention It's hellish satin?? Good. :)

I like how it came out overall but I still loath sewing satin.

Also I would love to have an 18/36 corseted waist to hip ratio but alas I live in the land of 28/44 :)

Here is the picture:
